The
Body-Mind Connection
There
is increasing evidence pointing to the importance of
the mind-body connection inimproving and maintaining
physical health. For example, recent studies have shown
a link between heart disease and attitude. In her Book,
Learn to be an Optimist, psychologist Lucy MacDonald
points out that "... psychoneuroimmunology looks
at how emotions and behaviours, particularly those associated
with stress, directly impact the immune system. Although
stress is initially a psychological experience, it also
provokes a physical response in the form of increased
production of adrenaline (epinephrine), which makes
muscles tense, and breathing shallow and rapid. Adrenaline
also destroys white blood cells, which are crucial to
a healthy immune system.... if you suffer chronic stress
your adrenaline level will be at a constant high and
you will be more likely to fall ill... if you lower
your stress levels... you will support your immune system
and help protect yourself from illness."
Each
flower used in the Bach Flower Remedy system has a unique
energetic quality that corresponds to a positive emotional
state. The vibrational quality of the flower is transferred
to pure spring water and preserved in brandy to form
a remedy. According to Bach, the flower's energy pushes
out the negative state and adds it's corresponding positive
state, minimizing the effect of the negative emotion.
Addressing
an imbalance in a person's emotional or mental state
by substituting a positive state allows the body to
find balance and then to affect the necessary changes
that can promote healing. In this way, the remedies
do not address the symptoms of the illness, but rather
the negative state of mind or emotional imbalance that
has brought the illness on.
In
order for a person to be in a state of good health,
he must maintain a state of harmony between the soul
and the mind. When our personalities are distracted
from the path laid out by our soul, the soul and the
mind enter a state of conflict and the result is illness.
Illness comes in a form that reflects the nature of
the conflict between soul and mind. Health can be restored
by eliminating the conflict through understanding and
knowledge of the cause of the conflict and returning
to the path laid out by the Soul.
Dr.
Bach believed that the purpose of disease is to draw
our attention to faults in our thinking or in our behavior
which have caused us to deviate from the plan drawn
out for us by our Divine Soul. If we learn our lessons
quickly enough, we can avoid illness and maintain a
state of peace, joy and happiness.
The
remedies developed by Dr. Edward Bach, discovered in
the 1920s and 30s, were designed to address just such
states of mind. In understanding how to use the remedies,
you are no longer at the mercy of states such as anxiety,
fear, worry, discouragement, exhaustion, guilt or sadness,
any of which can unduly affect performance at work,
relationships with your children and partners, and overall
effectiveness in achieving personal goals.
In
addition to the stresses of daily life, important life
transitions, such as marriage, school changes, breakups,
moves, job changes, can be made more smooth with the
use of the Bach Flower Remedies.
In
this workshop, you will learn how to identify the states
of mind that are causing undue stress, then learn how
to select, prepare and use the Bach Flower Remedies
for yourself and your family. I will share my experiences
with these remedies accumulated over many years, including
work with people of all ages, from babies to the elderly,
as well as work with animals, cats, dogs, horses and
birds!
This
is a hands-on workshop; participants will prepare treatment
bottles for personal use.
Dr.
Edward Bach, noted British physician, bacteriologist
and researcher, recognized that moods and common states
of mind such as lack of confidence, anxiety, fear, worry,
despair, guilt and exhaustion can induce imbalances
in the body which in turn threaten health and affect
vitality so that resistance to disease becomes diminished.
To regain harmony and balance, the negative state of
mind must be replaced with its opposite virtue.
Bach
wanted a safe, natural and gentle system of treatment,
which he found when he turned to nature where he discovered
his revolutionary therapeutic system. He observed and
classified 38 negative states of mind, commonly experienced
by all. For each mood, he discovered a corresponding
flower from a plant or tree which enabled the alleviation
of its negative state. For example the essence of the
flower larch was found to help individuals who lack
self confidence, and elm can help those who feel overwhelmed
by life circumstances.
The
Bach Flower Remedies encourage the expression of the
positive aspects of the individual's nature, promoting
strength where there is weakness, patience where there
is impatience, courage where there is lack of self-confidence,
certainty where there is indecision. Passing from the
negative state to the positive enables our natural healing
processes. The Bach Flower Remedies are a gentle and
effective alternative for all who are interested in
natural methods for gaining mental, emotional and physical
health and harmony.
