Urban Legends Part II: Lucky 7
July 4, 2007
by Pauline Edward

Here we go again! I find it interesting to see how easy it is for perfectly intelligent people to become distracted and think like seven year olds when it comes to certain subjects such as numerology and astrology. It seems that myth and mystery are an important part of our culture, and perhaps up to a certain point, even essential components of our experience. But at some point, you want to stand back and be realistic.

Last June I was contacted by a reporter at the National Post concerning rumors that had been circulating on the Internet and in the media. Some people believed that Tuesday June 6 2006 was an especially dark day, on which "a demon child would be born...." because it was a 6-6-6 day. They even encouraged pregnant women not to give birth on that day! First of all, Tuesday June 6th was not a 6-6-6 day, but rather a 6-6-8, since 2006 actually adds up to "8" (2+0+0+6=8). In fact, June 6, 2004 was a 6-6-6 day, as were June 6 1995, June 6 1986, June 6 1977, etc... There must therefore be lots of little devils running around the world today! Additionally, these dates add up to 18, or 1+8, a 9. The number 18, is a favorite with many people, including Dr. Wayne Dyer, who admits to writing 18 chapters in his books because it represents the eternal, from "one" to "infinity". Children born on Tuesday the 6th, 2006, are likely to be caring, affectionate, sensitive, natural born mediators since this date actually adds up to a number "2" (Life Path 2).

Okay. Now for this year's numbers hoopla. This week I've been contacted by a couple of reporters seeking my opinion on the lucky number 7. First of all, what is luck? Luck is a subjective and even arbitrary notion claiming that events or circumstances can be influenced by persons, places or objects of special significance. This concept is especially common with people working in highly competitive fields where hard work and talent are seen to go hand-in-hand with more esoteric forces such as chance. Athletes for example can be a very superstitious lot, and many will admit to having a "lucky object" on hand for important games. These lucky objects can range from a favorite pair of socks to red silk shorts. I believe that for athletes, these lucky objects serve as a point of focus for maintaining a positive attitude. If you believe that your red silk shorts will help you win the game and you maintain that thought, you are more likely to have a positive outcome than if you were to waste your energy worrying about the outcome of your game.

Some people are claiming that July 7 2007 will be an especially auspicious day, going so far as to schedule important events such as weddings on that day. If we apply the same approach to July 7, 2007, we have 7+7+2007, which gives 7+7+9, for a total of 23, a day with a numeric value is 5 (2+3). By the way, September 11, 2001 also adds up to the number 23(5), as does November 11 1918, Armistice Day.

The point is, if you truly believe that July 7, or August 8, or February 9 or which ever day is a very lucky day for you, then knock yourself out. Make the best of it. If you believe that red silk shorts will do it for you, go for it. The luck of this day has nothing to do with external forces. It will certainly not be a lucky day for every single person on the planet: people will be killed in the Middle East and elsewhere, and far too many children will have nothing to eat on July 7, 2007. Recognize that you are making this day special by the way you choose to think about it. Your marriage, or your golf game or whatever you are banking on for success on July 7 will depend on your continued hard work and dedication.

From a numerological perspective, a number six day would be more auspicious for marriage as it stands for responsibility, love, and harmony. The number seven represents the inner life, analysis and solitude.
